Reconnecting with a loyal companion often brings indescribable joy and relief.

In a heartwarming event, former Shaker Heights police officer Chad Hagan was reunited with his K9 partner, Igor, after a period of separation.

Hagan, who had recently transitioned to the Berea Police Department, had to leave Igor behind despite being offered an extended contract with Shaker Heights.

The Shaker Heights City Council allowed Hagan to welcome Igor back into his family due to an amendment to policy.

The policy change meant that officers like Hagan could now acquire their police canines, given they cover the cost of a new dog and its training.

This adjustment was made possible through concerted public support, illustrated by over 36,000 people advocating through a petition.

Hagan exemplified his commitment by fulfilling the cost requirements, thus ensuring Igor could spend the holiday season with his original family, clearly showing the deep bond between the officer and his canine comrade.

A costly reunion

Hagan spent $16,500 to fund Igor’s replacement and the subsequent training for the new canine and its handler.

Hagan’s spouse, Danielle, expressed how Igor is considered family, their first ‘baby’ predating their child.

The Hagans took the necessary steps to ensure Igor’s return by Christmas, an effort that drew widespread support and attention.

Over 36,000 people showed support through a petition on Change.org.

Shaker Heights administration, too, communicated satisfaction with the resolution, highlighted by the council’s amendment.

Time to celebrate

Although challenging to articulate, the joy felt by the Hagans is unmistakable; Igor’s return home is more than just a happy occasion—it’s family reunited.

The reunion, taking place at Beacon Hill Kennels in Parma, was a joyous occasion for Hagan and his family.

In readiness for Igor’s return, the Hagans planned a celebratory dinner featuring a steak, honoring the special occasion.

Shaker Heights officials expressed contentment with the resolution, affirming the policy adjustment facilitated a satisfactory outcome.

This story of dedication and love transcended local boundaries, gaining international interest and prompting a wave of support.
