Introduction

The Saluki-Poodle mix goes by a few different names: Salukidoodle, Salukipoo, Saldoodle, or Salpoo.

This designer mix does not have a lengthy history. Similar to most Doodle breeds, the Salukidoodle does not have an origin story on record either.

Fortunately, both parent breeds have some history that is worth noting. Let’s take a closer look!

Saluki

Similar to the Greyhound in appearance, activity, and independence, this dog breed is for athletes. If you own a Saluki, you can most definitely expect to chase after him or her a few times (per week).

They have a very unique history that reaches back thousands of years.

History

Salukis have a long past as royal hunting dogs. It is believed that the breed may have originated as early as 7000 B.C. They were originally used by Arab tribesmen to hunt gazelle [1]www.akc.org/dog-breeds/saluki/.

Salukis are known as the royal dog of Egypt. Held in such high esteem, Saluki bodies were often mummified like pharaohs [2]www.akc.org/dog-breeds/saluki/.

Their popularity did not stop in Egypt. Used as hunting dogs in the Middle East and Asia as well, these magnificent sighthounds were even employed by the likes of Alexander the Great [3]www.akc.org/dog-breeds/saluki/.

Salukis were first brought to England in the mid-1800s. They were recognized as an official breed by the AKC in 1927 and the United Kennel Club in 1956 [4]www.akc.org/dog-breeds/saluki/ [5]www.ukcdogs.com/saluki.

Modern Day Popularity

The breed is fairly popular today. Salukis are ranked as the 120th most popular dog in the AKC breed polls.

Poodle

The Poodle was bred as a waterfowl retriever in Germany. Their origin can be traced back nearly 400 years ago.

Poodles eventually left the hunting fields and made their way throughout Europe and eventually America. They were bred down in size to create the Miniature and Toy sizes.

They were adored by French nobles, featured in circus acts, and recognized as great companions for city dwellers. Now, the Poodle enjoys the homes of many families throughout the world.

As a member of the hound group, Salukis have an athletic build. Male Salukis range in height from 23 to 28 inches, with females being noticeably smaller [6]salukiclub.org/akc-saluki-breed-standard.html.

Weight

As an adult, Salukipoos range in weight from 40-70 lbs.

The slim features of a Saluki put its weight range from 40 to 65 pounds. Females tend to weigh less than males [7]www.akc.org/dog-breeds/saluki/.

Coat Colors

Thanks to both parent breeds, the Saluki-Poodle mix has a vast array of coat colors to choose from. It ranges from white to black and everything in between.

Salukis may be seen in nearly any color or color combination. They can also have a variety of different markings. A few possible colors that Salukis can have are: black, silver, tan, chocolate, cream, fawn, golden, and red [8]www.akc.org/dog-breeds/saluki/.

Poodles have a large variety of colors as well. They can be white, black, brown, red, silver, beige, apricot, blue, and a few others.

Ultimately, the coloring of a Saluki-Poodle mix will depend on the colors and genes of the parents. You can see that they have quite a range of coat-color possibilities.

Coat Type

A Salukidoodle coat is expected to be medium in length. It could be curly or wavy due to the Poodle parent. Or it may be light and feathery like a Saluki’s coat.

The coat of a Saluki is silky, soft, and short. Feathering is found on the backs of their legs, on the throats of adults, and the thighs and shoulders of puppies. Smooth coated Salukis look very much the same, minus the feathering [9]www.ukcdogs.com/saluki.

Poodles have long and curly coats. They require frequent grooming or else things will get out of hand quickly.

Traits & Characteristics

Temperament

As bright, active dogs, Salukidoodles tend to be independent. They are not dogs that you want to have in a yard without a tall fence. They are hunting dogs, and they will hunt.

Salukidoodles are not the best choice for a watchdog, but they are gentle and loyal. They are very affectionate with their family. Given no squirrels distract them in the process, a Salukipoo will be happy to follow you wherever you take them!

They are both independent and eager to please. This means that they may be a bit difficult to train at times, but consistent work can get the job done.

Energy Level

Salukidoodles are moderately energetic. Their energy levels aren’t off the charts but they do require a fair amount of daily activities. Additionally, they crave things that will make them think and use their brain.

As hunting dogs, Salukis and Poodles have been bred to have higher energy levels. They are also independent and intelligent breeds, and so they need plenty of mental stimulation.

Are Saluki-Poodle mixes good with young children?

If you are looking for a dog that will let your young children climb all over it, the Salukidoodle may not be the right dog for you.

Poodles are decent with children but Salukis aren’t great. This doesn’t mean they can’t be around them but extra supervision and caution are advised.

Health

If your Salukidoodle is well cared for, it will likely live a healthy, happy life. The breed is considered to be hardy and adaptable.

Of course, there will always be exceptions, and it may be a good idea to get your dog’s heart and thyroid checked. You should also be aware of the risks of bloat and gastric torsion.

Common Health Issues

Salukidoodles are a healthy breed overall. Heart disease and issues, autoimmune or blood conditions, and certain cancers are not uncommon with the breed.

However, most Saluki-Poodle mixes stay healthy throughout the course of their lives. If you get one from a breeder, speak with them about possible health concerns and testing.

Life Expectancy

On average, the Saluki-Poodle mix will live between 10-18 years.

This is highly dependent on genes and lifestyle. A healthy dog with no underlying health issues should be expected to live quite long.

The average Saluki can be expected to live anywhere from 10 to 17 years [10]www.akc.org/dog-breeds/saluki/. Most Salukis have been found to reach the age of 13, with many living upwards of 15 years [11]salukiclub.org/akc-saluki-breed-standard.html.

Conclusion

The Saluki has a rich history as one of the oldest dog breeds. They are intelligent, athletic, and independent. The Poodle is equal in intelligence and athleticism. The combination creates a Doodle breed that is both a nerd and a jock.

A Salukidoodle is a perfect mix for you and your family so long as you are willing to satisfy its active mind and body!
